Ionic Bake Sale – The Result

On Monday 27th April we held the Ionic 10k Run Bake Sale at Chadwick House, Birchwood Park to raise money for St Rocco’s Hospice.

The Ionic team baked lots of wonderful cakes; including the very popular lemon drizzle cake and red velvet cake.

The cakes went down a storm and we are delighted to announce that we raised an amazing £134.27!

We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came down to give pounds and gain a few pounds for a very worthwhile charity.

Join us for the Ionic Bake Sale on Monday 27th April!

This year, 18 employees at Ionic Recruitment are taking part in the Manchester 10k to raise funds for St. Rocco’s Hospice.

St. Rocco’s Hospice is a fantastic and inspiring charity that gives specialist care to patients with life limiting illnesses in the Warrington area.

The Ionic team is getting involved to raise money, which will help to provide the resources required to ensure patients enjoy an active and happy life.

We would be grateful of any donations big or small.

To help us reach our target we will be selling delectable cupcakes, flapjacks, brownies and more in Chadwick House, between 12-2pm.

The Counteroffer Conundrum

Here at Ionic, January has been an extremely busy month for our permanent recruitment team. In this month alone, we’ve seen an increase of over 45% new permanent construction jobs being registered with us.

With such an increase in construction companies looking to recruit and the mass skills shortages in the construction sector, it’s created the perfect storm as companies  risk of losing staff as fast  as they are recruiting.

In the last 12 months, construction companies have chosen to make serious counter offers to staff who have given in their notice, as many team members are business or project critical and they simply can’t afford to lose them.

From our experience, we’ve seen counter offers in excess of 20-25% of the person’s annual salary!

Our permanent recruitment team speak with large numbers of permanently employed candidates on a daily basis. During the conversation, we always ask their reasons for wanting to change employers and it’s seldom that money come into the equation.

More often than not, candidates want to seek out pastures new because they feel undervalued, unappreciated or they haven’t received any investment in their training and development and have stagnated in their role.

This results in you taking the bold step to attend interviews, negotiating an offer of employment and accepting a new job with an employer that promises to offer you all of things your present company hasn’t given to you.

The day then arrives of you handing in your notice with your manager and instead of wishing you good luck, they hit you with a significant counter offer of more money.

Why staff retention should be a key part of your agenda in 2015

This week marks the first full week back into work after the Christmas break. For many people, Christmas hasn’t just been a time for turkey and mince pies; but has been a time to reflect on their careers.

According to a recent survey conducted by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM), over a third of employees are planning to change jobs in 2015.

The majority of individuals surveyed are looking to change employment to access better career progression routes, with the second highest percentage wanting to move for an increase in salary.

The results of the survey suggest the reasons for considering a change of employer is a marked increase in the confidence of the UK economy and the fact that many individuals careers and salaries have stagnated during the recession.

Throughout our many years’ experience of speaking with candidates, the survey backs up what we’ve seen, as it’s very rare that candidates look to change employers because of money alone.

In a number of instances, employers feel that increasing a person’s salary will placate the person when the reality is that most employees seek recognition and the opportunity to progress their career.

Ionic Recruitment Donates to Christmas Toy Appeal

Ionic Recruitment, the specialist consultancy within Construction, Social Housing and Maintenance sectors, has truly embraced the festive spirit this year by donating 30 presents to Wire FM’s Christmas toy appeal.

The Christmas toy appeal is an initiative designed to put a smile on the faces of local, vulnerable children who may not receive a present on Christmas day. Wire FM collects presents donated by businesses in the North West and delivers them to Children’s charities across Warrington, Widnes and Runcorn.

After hearing about the charitable appeal on Wire FM, Ionic Recruitment began encouraging its staff to get involved. Rather than spending money on a secret Santa present this year, the business donated presents to the toy appeal, gathering an impressive 30 gifts in total.

Construction Companies Fall Foul of False Self-Employment

“Britain has been dubbed the self-employment capital of western Europe with 4.5 million classed as self-employed, accounting for more than 15% of the labour force.

Many people working in construction are genuinely self-employed, however, UKCG (UK Contractors’ Group) recognises that some are not ‘false self-employment’ and that, under current tax rules, it is extremely difficult for law abiding companies to decide whether somebody is really self employed or should be taxed within PAYE. It is estimated that false self-employment is costing the Exchequer £1.9 billion per annum.

“Since April 2014, the government has introduced new legislative rules to clamp down on false self-employment. Recruitment agencies are now required to ensure all workers supplied to a business, and who no longer pass HMRC’s test for being self-employed, are treated as full employees, and added to payroll appropriately.

Ionic goes back to school

Year 10 students at Stockport Academy were treated to a visit from Ionic Recruitment, a leading Construction, Social Housing and Maintenance Recruitment Agency to learn all about the world of entrepreneurship and offer advice on careers in construction.

Martyn Makinson, Managing Director at Ionic Recruitment, based in Warrington, visited the Academy to take part in the Founders4School Role Model Event. He was invited to take part thanks to an impressive CV, which includes over 18 years’ experience of operating within a wide range of industry sectors on a global scale. The event is designed to help students understand what entrepreneurs do and showcase entrepreneurship as a high impact career choice.
